How Long Does It Take to Learn the Oud? A Realistic Timeline for Adults

By Wael Salah ·

One of the first questions adults ask me is: “How long until I can play a song?” There is no single number, but most adult students who practise regularly go through clear stages.

Month one: the foundations

Posture, holding the risha, tuning, and your first notes on a fretless neck. By the end of the month you play simple exercises and short phrases with clean notes.

After 3 months: first pieces

You play one or two traditional pieces, know two basic rhythms, and start to hear the character of maqams such as Rast and Bayati.

6 months to a year: playing with confidence

You play well-known songs with more confidence, move around the neck easily, and try your first short taqasim. This is where the oud becomes real fun.

How much should I practise?

15–20 minutes a day beats two hours once a week. Consistency is what builds left-hand accuracy and clean intonation.

What speeds things up?

  • A teacher who fixes posture and risha early, before habits set in.
  • A well-set-up oud with a comfortable string height.
  • Clear weekly goals after every lesson.
  • Daily listening to Arabic music and maqam.
